Elliot stepped into the room and peered around the stack of books and magazines she was carrying. Jerin set the cookies and candy on the bedside table and sat down. Elliot thought about dumping her load on the bed, but changed her mind.
The person on the bed grinned. “Thanks, guys.”
“No problem,” Jerin answered. “We thought you might get bored.”
The other eyed the cookies suspiciously. “Did you make those?”
“Jerin’s cookies are good.”
He smiled at Elliot. “Yes, they are, thank you very much.”
“So,” Elliot said, taking a deep breath, “how are you?”
“Well, I’m stuck in a hospital, can’t move, and have an IV in my arm. How are you?”
“At least you’re still alive,” Jerin pointed out.
“True.”
Elliot choked and hugged him. “I’m so glad you are, Zann!”
The red-haired Russian winced. “Careful. I’m still delicate.”
Jerin snorted. “Yeah, you look real delicate.”
Zann grinned, happy to be with his friends once again. Noticing Elliot was tearing up again, he patted her on the arm. “I’m still alive, thanks to you. See?”
She nodded, her head spinning back two weeks before.
Elliot squeezed Zann’s limp hand one last time. Tears blurred her eyes, but she noticed something. His chest still moved up and down in a shuddering motion. She nudged Jerin, too breathless to speak. Closing her eyes, she dared to hope.
“He’s still breathing,” Jerin whispered.
Suddenly, he was moving. He tossed her his iPod and scooped up Zann with strength fueled by desperation. “Call the Russians. Get them to take care of this lot. I’m getting him to the nearest hospital!”
He sprinted into the elevator and hit the up button. As the doors closed, Elliot was explaining in a hurried manner what had happened to the Russian intelligence. Fifteen minutes later, she joined Jerin in the hospital and listened as a doctor explained through a translator that they were performing emergency surgery. Several hours later, a tired-looking doctor came out and explained that the bullet had just misted his heart. Not daring to breathe, Jerin asked if he was going to make it. Several emotions flickered across the doctor’s face before he answered. He said that the surgery had gone well, but Zann was still in a delicate state. He had been in intensive care for ten days, and had only been moved four days earlier. Finally, things were looking up. So the two spies, who had decided to stay in Moscow for their friend, were getting to see him for the first time since taking him there.
Zann squeezed her hand lightly, bringing Elliot back to the present. “Hey,” he said. “I’m okay now. Thanks so much for everything.”
A nurse poked her head in and said something in Russian. Turning, Elliot frowned and replied in the same language. The nurse paused, sighed, and said something that sounded like an assent. Elliot nodded self-satisfactory.
Zann’s eyebrows rose. “You’ve been learning Russian.”
Elliot blushed slightly, but Jerin grinned. “Yeah, she’s got a head for languages. Soon, you two will be making fun of me, and I’ll have no idea what you’re saying.”
The Russian grinned and eyed the magazines. Most of them were in Russian, but some were in English. One was a Batman comic book. He had a feeling that was from Jerin.
“No gun magazines. We thought you’d want to lay off the guns for awhile.”
Zann chuckled and rubbed his chest. “Yeah, no guns for me for a while—doctor’s orders, you know.”
Just then, there was knock on the door. To everyone’s surprise, a tall black man stepped in, followed by a small woman.
Mr. Foley, the director of the Agency, shifted his glasses slightly. “First off, I’d like to congratulate you and thank you three for stopping this international disaster on behalf of both countries’ presidents. Had this happened, it would have been traced back to Moscow, and a war may have broken out. Especially you, Agent Ryme. Had you not overheard them, we would be minus a president and a Pentagon right now. ” He paused and looked over his glasses at the three spies. “I have another job for you three once Mr. Kolzak fully recovers.”
Zann arched his eyebrows. “For me, too?”
Alberta Small nodded. “Yes. Since you three work so well together as a team, the Russians have agreed to lend you to us. Plus, I think they are still a little embarrassed that there are still people who want the USSR back.”
Mr. Foley turned to Elliot. “Why the shocked and nervous face, Agent Ryme? You can handle another mission, right?”
Elliot looked around at Zann, Jerin, Alberta Small, and Mr. Foley. “I-I’m not even a field agent!”
They all laughed.
