Robyn Rivers hummed to herself as she dusted. The humming stopped the moment she heard voices coming from the room she had given Agent Chaplen. She recognized the voice as Captain Long’s.
“It shouldn’t be that difficult. You saw the scar on his face. That will easily give him away.”
“You don’t understand. I learned a great deal last night, which was precisely what I intended to do.” That was Chaplen’s voice.
Robyn’s left eyebrow slid up.
Apparently, Long’s curiosity was aroused as well. “What do you mean by that?”
“I never intended to capture the boy last night. I only wanted to get to know him a little.”
There was a pause. “And?”
Chaplen chuckled. “You are impatient, like all young men. Just as I predicted, I have underestimated the boy. Capturing this dog-fox will require patience. Though his attitude is cocky, the boy is cautious. If we wait long enough, he will make a slip.”
“Don’t bet your life on it,” Robyn muttered.
Long was silent, most likely digesting what Chaplen had said. “So why can’t we just look for a lad his height with a long scar on his face?”
Agent Chaplen sighed. “Because he is not stupid. He won’t parade around town with a large scar across his face. He’ll cover it up. Probably with the face powder that actors use.”
“He’s a clever man, Robyn.”
Robyn had resumed her dusting at the sound of her brother’s footsteps. She frowned. “What do you mean by that?”
Ben put his hands on his hips and shook his head. “Robyn-”
“Aye?”
He rolled his eyes. Then, a wicked grinned formed on his face. “You’re scar is showing.”
Robyn reached up to touch her face. “It is? Really?”
Ben snickered.
“Benjamin Rivers!” Robyn hissed. She stomped on his foot and walked away.
Ben followed her, laughing. “Aw, come on, Robyn, I’m your brother. I know you better than you know yourself. How long where you planning to keep me in the dark?”
Robyn turned her head slightly. “As long as you’d stay in there.”
Ben rolled his eyes. Robyn stopped. “Do you know how dangerous it is for you to know? Especially with Agent Clever-britches here.”
Ben sighed. “You think I’m going to tell?”
“No. He could suspect your knowledge and force it out of you.”
Ben snorted. “He’s got nothing to use against me.”
Robyn turned and folded her arms across her chest. She tilted her eyebrow slightly.
The realization of what Chaplen could use against him caused Ben to laugh. “That’s funny. Well, there’s an easy way to get out of that. I’ll make him promise not to hurt you then tell him who the Shadow Fox is.”
Robyn rolled her eyes. “Then he would watch me like a hawk and I would never accomplish anything. Or learn anything, for that matter.”
Ben chuckled. “Well that explains your sudden turn into a silly girl. And the sudden appearance of a strange horse in the barn. Where did you find her?”
“Remember when I came home with my hair rudely cut and singed clothes?”
Ben nodded. “Yes. You were wearing my Sunday breeches.”
Robyn grinned sheepishly. “Well, mine were dirty. Anyway, I rescued her from a burning barn. Her owner thought she was possessed and tried to burn her.”
Ben nodded. “The day after that, Father was thrown in prison.” He shook his head. “Grandfather should never have taught you to sword fight.”

Agent Chaplen strode out of his room. He stopped, turned and said, “We’ll meet at the tavern to discuss our plans.” Turning, he spied Robyn. “You, lass, have you been listening?”
Robyn blinked stupidly. “Listing to what, sir, the birds? Oh, aye, they sing quite beautifully this time of year. ”
Chaplen’s lip twitched. “Aye, that’s what I meant. Good afternoon, lass.”
“And a fine one to you, sir.” Robyn watched him leave. Once he was gone, she smirked. “So, the tavern it is.”
