Agent Chaplen read the news paper and drank his tea, as was his custom. He was drinking it in the kitchen this afternoon, though. Miss Rivers was not a happy person, so he had not dared to hope she would make it for him—much less bring it up to his room.
His quiet revelries were interrupted by Sovay stomping through the kitchen and slamming the door on her way out. A minute later, Ben entered and set down the pile of wood he was carrying. He glanced at the agent, who raised his eyebrows at him over his newspaper.
“My goodness, what is the cause of Miss Willow’s stomping about?”
Ben huffed. “Robyn is angry about something, and Sovay is angry because Robyn will not tell her what she is angry about. All I know is that it has something to do with Jack Richards.”
Agent Chaplen smiled. “Perhaps I can shed some light on the subject. Miss Rivers must have heard that Mr. Richards was discovered as the spy in General Washington’s camp.”
Ben’s jaw dropped. “What?!”
“’Tis the truth. General How told me of it himself.”
Ben quickly left the kitchen. Chaplen chuckled to himself as he closed his newspaper. In the middle of closing the paper, he froze. Now, why on earth would Miss Rivers care about Jack being a British spy? She never showed any interest in the current war. He wondered if she even knew there was one going on. They had been friends, he knew, but why would she care? He frowned to himself. He would log that away and contemplate it later.

Sovay and Ben cornered Robyn in the barn.
“Jack Richards was the spy?!” Sovay yelled.
Ben nodded. “Agent Chaplen said that Howe told him.”
“And we are learning this from Chaplen?!”
“I’m inclined to agree with Sovay. Why did you not tell us?”
Robyn stood with her back to them, feeding her horse. “I do not wish to talk about it.”
Sovay put her hands on her hips and stomped her foot. “That’s not an option! We want answers!”
Ben nodded. “Did he turn you in to Howe?!”
“Is that where you went?! “
“Did you turn him in?!”
“Is General Washington going to shoot him?!
“Is he dead?!” they both shouted.
Robyn sighed. She was not going to get the pleasure of moping around for a while. “Yes, yes, yes, no, and no.”
“So, do we get an explanation?” Sovay prodded.
“Just a quick story? We won’t press any further,” Ben added.
Taking a deep breath, Robyn briefly explained. Once her tail was finished, she concluded, “And, against my better judgment, I trusted him.”
She wisely left out the part where they had chided her for not trusting him at first. They both appreciated this.
“I’m going to break his nose.”
Sovay snorted. “I’m going to break every bone in his body.”
Robyn shook her head. “It would be best to put him out of our minds. We should just pretend like he never existed.”
She slipped out of the barn. Sovay and Ben exchanged glances. “I doubt we can do that,” Sovay murmured.
Ben nodded. “Robyn definitely will not just forget about him.”

What's this? A regular scheduled post? WHAT? She's on time?!
I know, right? I got into a writing mood the other day, so I have something to post! Yay! You can thank Thanksgiving Break for that one. So, “Robyn is angry about something, and Sovay is angry because Robyn will not tell her what she is angry about," Ben's confused, and Chaplen's drinking his tea. Why does this sound like something that would go on at my house? Hmmmmmmm.
Don't complain that it's short. Don't.
Have a good week. If I'm not drooling on my desk after my first two finals on Monday next, I'll post another chapter! Yay me!
