Chapter 21-- Tea-time Bantering

Sovay trotted inside, her eyes alight. “Robyn? Cousin?”
The girl in question practically fell down the stairs, looking a little frazzled. She smiled lopsidedly. “Salutations, Sovay!”
Her cousin nearly tackled her. Sovay hugged her so tightly, Robyn swore she heard her vertebrae cracking. Robyn was excited to see her cousin, but a little bit worried. She had been in a hurry to change her clothes, but had not failed to notice Sovay’s bags at the foot of her bed.
How am I going to slip out if need be? I don’t remember Sovay being a heavy sleeper.
However, she put on a cheerful face and listened to her cousin’s tale of her trip.
----
There was a knock at the door. Robyn slipped out of the kitchen where she was preparing afternoon tea for the British officers and Agent Chaplen. She tugged it open, and Alice marched in, her brother close behind.
“Do come in,” Robyn mumbled.
Jacob smiled apologetically. “It would appear we are.”
She quirked an eyebrow at him. Usually he would have simply stridden past her. Thinking about all this, she shut the door. “Oh, Jacob, Ben is in the stables.”
He nodded a thanks and slipped out.
Robyn stepped into the kitchen just in time to hear Alice and Sovay arguing while Agent Chaplen sipped the tea she had set out for him.
“Humph, Sovay, you don’t know anything. You don’t live here.”
Robyn’s cousin looked like she was about to strangle something. She threw Sovay a warning glance before the girl leaped across the table and throttled Alice.
Smiling, she said, “I’ll be right back.” She bent down and hissed in her cousin’s ear, “Don’t kill anything while I’m gone.”
Sovay grinned, but didn’t say anything.
Robyn crossed the lawn to the stables. She pushed open the barn’s door and stepped inside. Ben and Jacob froze, their heads close together. Jacob looked as if he’d been caught stealing the king’s crown. She arched an eyebrow at her brother. His face remained expressionless.
Making a mental note to drive the answers out of him later, she said, “Tea is served.”
The girl returned to the house to find Sovay and Alice arguing about the Shadow Fox.
“He sounds like a wonderful lad to me. I think I’d like to meet him.”
Alice snorted so loudly Chaplen jumped. “Ha, whatever you say, Sovay. He’s nothing but a pest.” She paused. “However, I heard he’s very handsome.”
Robyn spewed coffee all over Agent Chaplen’s newspaper. He bent the corner down to look at her. Quickly, she busied herself cleaning up the mess to hide her laughter.
Sovay rolled her eyes. “Oh, brother! It doesn’t matter what he looks like! Besides, how do you know? No one has ever seen his face.”
Alice lifted her nose in the air. “Well, that’s what some one told me.”
“Ben,” Sovay said before Alice could possibly add anything else to her appearance speech. “Tell us some of the things he’s done.”
Robyn leaned forward, her eyebrows up. This would be most interesting.
Ben caught the expression and smiled slightly. “Well, thus far, I’ve saved his life seventy times. He keeps getting himself shot! How dumb can a person get?”
Robyn glared at him, but was forced to say silent. Chaplen folded the corner of the paper down to look at Ben, and Robyn’s face returned to its neutral position.
Ben laughed. “I’m just kidding. He’s great. Once, he escaped from a jailhouse with a Redcoat deserter. He saved General Washington’s life more than once. The Shadow Fox will help us win this war.”
“If his neck is not stretched before its end.” The agent had disappeared behind his newspaper again.
“Ha!” Everyone seemed surprised that the exclamation had come from Sovay. “You haven’t been able to catch him these many months. I doubt you will ever.”
Agent Chaplen just smiled behind his paper.

----
Poor Chaplen. He was startled and had to find a new newspaper.
I do love Sovay. And Ben. Oh, how he teases Robyn. I really love Brother/Sister pairs. They are such fun characters. This is one of those chapters that are mainly for fun, and to show that Robyn isn't always in a cloak. Plus, I'm introducing Sovay's character, and you all get to learn more about her spunky personality.
So you next week.
Ug, I'll be back at school
Oh, and I'm posting so early because I'm waiting for Doctor Who to load. It's taking forever.....
