Chapter 17-- Victory at a Price

With Agent Chaplen’s seal, Robyn left the city with ease. Soon, she was galloping with Midnight across the flats, Patriot on their heals.
General George Washington looked up as an officer burst into his study in the Vasel house.
“General, sir!”
“Yes, Captain?”
“There’s a man dying in the clearing about a mile from here! He says he has something important to tell you, and he won’t tell anyone else.”
Without a word, the general gathered his things and quickly left the house. He mounted his horse and road after the captain. Several minutes later, he arrived in the clearing several minutes later. A man in a Continental army uniform that was covered in sticky red blood lay on the ground, gasping for air. Washington leaped off his horse and knelt next to him.
“What can I do for you, soldier?”
Not in the least like a dying man, he sat up and aimed a pistol at the general’s heart. “You can die, rebel!”
Suddenly, a black and white dog burst into the clearing and tackled the man. Many more Redcoats burst into the clearing, and the captain pulled out his pistol, defending the general. A black horse with a cloaked rider soon followed the dog and everyone else in the clearing.
“Good dog, Patriot! Bite that nasty imposter!”
The black horse reared and knocked several of the Redcoats unconscious with her hooves, as her rider knocked out the rest with the flat of her blade. The Shadow Fox leaped off Midnight and gestured to Washington.
“Get on General!”
Suddenly, a second horse burst into the clearing. Without a second’s pause, the rider aimed at the Shadow Fox and fired. The boy clutched his shoulder and crumpled to his knees. Agent Chaplen spurred his horse forward. Quickly, he leaned down in his saddle and scooped the wounded boy up. He was lighter than the agent had expected, and was therefore over his horse’s neck in no time.
They galloped away, and Washington stared after them for several seconds in shock. He would have been captured or killed, but Midnight bumped him with her nose as if to say, “You heard what he said! Get on!”
So, he galloped back to safety with the captain and the dog on his heels. Once they were out of firing range, the horse seemed to lose her zeal to carry him to safety. She paused and looked back, as if searching for her master. The general patted her neck.
“He’ll be alright girl. Don’t worry.”
The horse neighed sadly, as if knowing his was lying, and walked back to the Vassel house.
When they arrived, several already armed and mounted men greeted him. “Sir! We heard shots and thought you were under attack.”
A second man noticed the three horses. “General, may I ask why you are riding one horse bareback while your horse has no rider?”
Washington dismounted Midnight and closed his eyes. “It was a trap. I survived, but at a great price.”
“What?!”
“The Shadow Fox has been captured.”

Don don dooooooooooon!!
Is this the end?!
Huzzah! General Washington is out of limbo! I had been at the beginning of this chapter for a while... probably nearly a half a year. Now I'm far ahead! This is how I've been writing this particular story, though. I'll get inspiration and just write and write, and then it will just die, and I won't write for several months.
Sorry it's short today. It's finals week, aaaah!
See ya'll next week!
C.P. out!
